Mary Anderson

Nel 1903, Mary Anderson, un'allevatrice di bestiame e una viticoltrice nata a Greene County nel 1866, mentre stava andando per lavoro a New York, incappò in una grande nevicata. Siccome l’unico modo per pulire il parabrezza era aprire i finestrini o scendere dall’auto o dal tram, si rese conto che autista e passeggeri pativano molto freddo. 

Ritornata in Alabama, disegnò uno strumento manuale per tenere pulito il parabrezza e se lo fece costruire da una ditta locale: consisteva in una leva interna all'auto che muoveva una stecca di gomma all'esterno del parabrezza.

Nel 1905 Anderson cercò di vendere il brevetto, ma non fu ritenuto un oggetto per cui valesse la pena di pagare essendo stato inventato da una donna; quando il brevetto decadde non fu da lei rinnovato e la Cadillac fu la prima fabbrica automobilistica a installare il tergicristallo come accessorio standard.

In 1903, Mary Anderson, a cattle rancher and winemaker born in Greene County in 1866, encountered a heavy snowfall while on her way to work in New York. Since the only way to clean the windshield was to open the windows or get out of the car or tram, she realized that the driver and passengers would get very cold.

After returning to Alabama, she designed a manual tool to keep the windshield clean and had it manufactured by a local company: it consisted of a lever inside the car that moved a rubber slat on the outside of the windshield.

In 1905 Anderson tried to sell the patent, but it wasn’t deemed an object worth paying for since it was invented by a woman; when the patent expired Mary didn’t renew it … Nonetheless, Cadillac was the first car factory to install the windshield wiper as a standard accessory.
