Ruth Wakefield

Ruth Jones Graves Wakefield (June 17, 1903 – January 10, 1977), a dietitian, educator, businesswoman, author, and chef, is best known as the inventor of the Toll House Cookie, the first chocolate chip cookie.

The story goes that in 1930, Ruth, the owner of The Toll House Inn, was preparing biscuits for her guests when she crumbled a semi-sweet Nestlé bar into small pieces. She had run out of cooking chocolate and hoped the bar would melt into the dough during baking. However, the chocolate didn’t melt completely, and instead, it held its shape — a happy accident that led to the creation of the beloved chocolate chip cookie.
